Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the FAQ section! Here, you will find some of the most common questions parents and carers have about Speech and Language Therapy. Whether you're wondering if your child might benefit from therapy, what sessions look like or how you can support your child at home, this page is here to help! Please feel free to get in touch if you feel you need further information.

Parents and Carers often ask.....

How do I know if my child needs Speech and Language Therapy?

As parents you are an expert in your child, but you should not be expected to be an expert in Speech and Language Therapy! It can be really difficult to know when to reach out for help. Jen offers a free 15 minute no obligation consultation call where you can discuss your concerns and decide if you want to move ahead with an appointment.

What if my child can't concentrate for a long time?

Sessions will be tailored to your child's ability using engaging, play based activities. It may be that your child's communication targets are around focusing and attending at first, before moving on to other aspects of their communication. I offer two lengths of therapy sessions to suit a variety of children's attention needs.

How do I prepare my child for their first session?

It can be helpful to explain that they will be playing games and doing some fun activities that will help them to speak or understand things better. Keeping the experience positive and reassuring can help ease any nervousness.

What if I don't live locally?

I am based in Northam, North Devon but I do not currently use a clinic space. I am able to come to your home or visit a setting your child attends and will calculate travel costs for you. This might include areas such as Westward Ho!, Appledore, Bideford, East-The-Water, Instow, Bickington, Fremington, Sticklepath, Landkey, Newport, Bishops Tawton, South Bolton, Bishops Nympton, Illfracombe, Saunton, Woolacombe, Braunton, Torrington, Hartland, Bradworthy, Woolsery plus many more!

What is the difference between 'Speech' and 'Language'?

When we talk about 'Speech', we are referring to how easily and clearly a child uses speech sounds when they talk. A child who is experiencing difficulties with their speech might be difficult to understand, even though they are using the correct words and sentences.

When we talk about 'Language' we mean the words a child is able to understand and use (As opposed to the individual sounds). There are a number of reasons why children might have difficulties understanding or using language.

Do you have a waiting list?

Currently I do not have a waiting list. Spaces to take on new children can depend on the frequency of support you would like for your child. Please do get in contact to discuss what I am able to offer.

Can my child have NHS Speech and Language Therapy and attend private therapy at the same time?

Yes! Receiving support from an independent Speech and Language Therapist should not affect the care you receive from the NHS team. It is in the best interests of your child for therapists to work in harmony together wherever possible. Having worked for the North Devon NHS Speech and Language Therapy team for over 14 years Jen has a good relationship with the local NHS service.

I don't want my child to miss out on School or Nursery, do you carry out visits?

Yes! I have experience working in many of the settings across North Devon. I am very supportive of a staff member being present at your child's sessions so that they can continue practice during the week.

How long does an Initial Assessment Take?

Prior to your appointment you will be sent some information gathering forms to complete. This enables me to make the most of the face to face time with your child. Initial assessments typically take around 1 hour, with a mixture of play based and formal assessments to suit your child's age and stage of development.

What is included in the cost of an Initial Assessment?

An Initial Assessment includes much more than just the face to face time with your child. The cost of this will cover information gathering, planning the session, face to face time with your child, analysing and writing up results along with a report (to include recommendations).

What if you don't have the expertise to work with my child?

As a qualified Speech and Language Therapist with over 14 years of experience I have a wide range of expertise and I am keen learner, continually developing my skillset. With that in mind, each child is unique and presents with an individual profile of strengths and needs. If I do not feel I have the skills or knowledge to work with your or your child I will make this clear, providing reassurance of willingness to develop this area, seek support form colleges or direct you to a Therapist who might better suit your needs.

TESTIMONIALS

"We recently reached out to Jen for advice and guidance to support our son's stammer. She was very quick to respond and provided really useful information and practical tools to help our son at home. Jen is clearly an expert in her field, very professional and gave us the opportunity to help our son straight away as soon as his stammer was identified at Nursery. We are very grateful for her help and would highly recommend."

"Jen's assessment of Primrose's speech challenges was spot on. She was able to do this remotely via video which made her service both efficient and accessible. The therapy programme she provided was fun and designed with a six year old and busy parent in mind. Jen was excellent at ensuring that Primrose felt encouraged and rewarded rather than criticised for her needs. I would highly recommend Jen to anyone looking for some good quality, fun and effective speech and language advice for their child."
